Nepal earthquake: information on how to help

Monks from Triten Norbutse rescuing people trapped due to collapsed buildings near the monastery.

Dear Sangha members, dear friends,

No doubt you have been following the news about the devastating earthquake in Nepal that has affected Kathmandu, Nepal and adjoining countries.

Our Sangha has a deep connection with Nepal. Kathmandu is the seat of Triten Norbutse, our parent monastery, and the main residence of our lamas.

Nepal is also home to long standing Bon communities all of which have been adversely affected by the present tragic circumstances.

While there haven’t been personal injuries or deaths at Triten Norbutse, monks and nuns and the whole Bon community in Nepal are deeply affected by the tragic loss of lives caused by the earthquake. Even thought no building has collapsed at Triten Norbutse, there are some cracks in some of the buildings.

Apart from the restoration of damages to Triten Norbutse, shortage of food, water, lack of shelter, clothing and medical supplies will continue. Therefore, supplies will need to be brought from neighboring countries and their cost will be much higher than usual. Moreover, we have learned that the Bon School in Lubra, Mustang has been severely damaged, including classrooms and the dining hall. All children have been sent back to their own families in remote villages. Many houses in the area of Jomson have collapsed this morning. At the moment we cannot estimate the full extent of the damage.

It is abundantly clear that Triten Norbutse, the wider Bon community and affected people in general need our moral and financial support. In recent days, many of you have contacted our lamas and Shenten asking how you could help.

In order to facilitate this we have opened a bank account to collect money to support all the needs that the monastery and the community will need to face as a consequence of the disaster, and that will require long term attention.

Khenpo Tenpa Yungdrung Rinpoche will assume full responsibility for the allocation of funds to specific needs.

Your contribution of whatever size will be much appreciated.
